The Birth of Sol Traditions

From what I hear, people seem to come into birthwork for one of two reasons. One, their experience in birth (whether it was exactly what they dreamed of or the complete opposite) inspired them to support others along their journey. Or two, for what feels like their whole life they have been obsessed with the birthworld and have always known they were meant to work in birth spaces.

For those who know me well, it’s clear that I am the later. For those who don’t know me yet, hi, I’m Lillian - absolute birth nerd since day one. Though it took me some time to figure out where I wanted to land in the birth space, I am so grateful to have landed in the doula world.

Growing up, my mom always prioritized “alternative” health (a.k.a. I was a regular with my chiropractor long before my 1st birthday and gargled echinacea most days before walking down the street to elementary school). Looking back now - I think we were suburban-scrunchy (scrunchy = sort of crunchy). “Alternative” has always been my normal and now in my adult life - it informs the way I see the world, how I care for my body, and now how I support others with a holistic lens.

Like many people, I took time over the last few years of being at home to start connecting with myself and diving into my own healing journey. I started out seeing an emotion and body code practitioner, added in regular reiki healings, meditation, gratitude, yoga, mindfulness, some tarot reads, and a few calls with a medium, and a course on connecting with divine feminine energy and here I am with a major shift from my awareness from just a few years ago. Choosing to walk the journey of healing (which lets be honest, once you start there’s no going back - once we know better we must do better) has opened my life to such great expansion and allowed me to really be led by my intuition and know that this is the work I am meant to be doing.

In early 2022 I came across a doula training program unlike any I had encountered before (and trust me I clocked a few solid hours looking at both in-person and online training options), instead of offering birth doula or postpartum doula or lactation support, or childbirth education this program offered it all - a beautifully holistic approach to the world of birthwork.

When I got into the program I felt a sense of urgency to “get on” with what I was doing which is when I created As You Are Doula Care. For a while, this brand felt like a good move and gave me a space to jump into content creation and the online birth world. But I knew from the start that this wasn’t quite it. I felt stuck and struggled to allow myself to move forward (despite a list full of ideas of the direction I wanted to head in) in my practice. It wasn’t until I was working with a feminine flow coach who taught me about the fertile void that I was able to give myself permission to just be

I craved expansion into broader spaces of community, femininity, and healing

and it took me months to figure out exactly what it actually was.

So this is where we are today, with the birth of Sol Traditions, rooted in birthwork and blooming into a village of mindful women.

Sol - Portuguese for Sun: Chosen to honour my ancestors who guide me and the sun in the sky who brings me warmth in more ways than one

Traditions - For my love of traditions and the beauty of traditional practices. And also as a reference to an old family story (the other side) that ends with “you don’t f*ck with tradition”

Today I welcome a new look for a fresh space, with renewed energy and clear intentions to welcome those seeking nourishing support on their journey to birth and beyond - and I hope you will join me.

In the coming weeks and months you will see our new women’s circle begin to form, and online resources and education for pregnancy, birth, and postpartum begin to bloom. Stay tuned to Instagram (@soltraditions) and be sure to jump on our email list to be the first to hear about upcoming happenings.
