Why Hire a Postpartum Doula?

Let’s start from square one again…

What the heck even is a postpartum doula?

Doula comes from an ancient Greek word meaning “woman’s servant” or “woman who serves”. A postpartum doula is a companion (a non-medical professional) present in the early postpartum days (typically up to 12 weeks postpartum) who supports and assists with the transition of bringing a new babe (or 2 or 3) home. Postpartum doulas have knowledge and experience on the ins and outs of the postpartum period, they support emotional and physical recovery after childbirth, infant soothing + comfort, light household tasks, and conversational support and resources for parents.

Postpartum doulas are a wealth of information for all things postpartum, from newborn feeding + sleeping, to healing after childbirth your postpartum doula has the answers and insights for what you’re experiencing including being able to identify what is normal and where you may need additional care and support.

Research finds that parents who work with postpartum doulas often better understand the cues from their newborn and learn more quickly what their sweet baby needs.

A postpartum doula isn’t just there to support mama and baby, but the whole family (whatever that looks like for you!). Doulas help dads, siblings and extended family members understand the balance of this new ecosystem, how to support mum, and care for baby while being able to recognize what works and what is helpful for the new family.

Postpartum doulas can get the whole family on board to confidently support mum and babe. Dads who work with doulas often feel more comfortable earlier on in caring for their newborn AND extended family members often better understand the care and support needed in this early stage and how to show up for their family.

Essentially, I see the role of a postpartum doula as a support there to nourish the family. To make sure that everyone is fed, rested, and settling in well to their new addition (or additions!). Everyone hears that it takes a village, and a postpartum doula can make a great addition to your village!

However you choose to welcome your new babe, I hope you are met with nourishing love + support.

yours in birth + beyond

xx Lillian
