Cultivating Calm for Navigating Labour

It’s commonly said that birth is as much (if not more) of a mental game as it is a physical one. So it’s important to uncover techniques that work for you to enhance feelings of calm in your birth space.

I suggest taking some time throughout your pregnancy (even just 5 minutes a day) to figure out which techniques feel best for you. Maybe you’ll love all of them, maybe one, maybe something else that isn’t included in this list - either way, you don’t want to be diffusing essential oils in your birth space only to find out you don’t actually like that smell.

So here’s a list of calming techniques you can practise and decide if you want to use it in your birth space.

Harness the Aromatherapy Power of Essential Oils

Essential oils can be a valuable tool for promoting relaxation and relieving stress during labour. Lavender and chamomile are known for their calming properties, while clary sage can help enhance contractions. Create a soothing ambiance by diffusing your favourite essential oils, or apply diluted oils to your pulse points for a comforting and grounding effect.

Embrace Affirmations

Affirmations are powerful statements that affirm your strength, resilience, and ability to birth your baby. Choose positive affirmations that resonate with you and repeat them aloud or silently during labour. Phrases like "I trust my body's wisdom" can help shift your mindset and instil confidence in your birthing journey.

Find Tranquillity through Meditation and Breathwork

Meditation and breathwork techniques can help you stay present, focused, and calm throughout labour. Practice deep breathing exercises, visualising each breath flowing in and out, grounding you in the moment. Incorporate guided meditations specifically tailored for labour to maintain a sense of inner peace and relaxation amidst the intensity.

Cultivate a Positive Mentality

Your mental state plays a significant role in how you experience labour. Approach childbirth with a positive mentality, believing in the innate wisdom of your body and its ability to birth your baby. Surround yourself with supportive and encouraging birth partners, midwives, or doulas who uplift your confidence and trust in the process. Maintain an open mindset and embrace the unexpected twists and turns that may arise during labour.

Address and Release Fears

Acknowledging and addressing fears is an essential step in preparing for a calm birth experience. Take time to identify any concerns or anxieties you may have and explore ways to address them. Discuss your fears with your birth support team, seek information and education to alleviate uncertainties, and consider therapy or counselling if needed. Embrace relaxation techniques, such as progressive muscle relaxation, to release tension and promote a sense of calmness.

As you embark on your journey to labour, remember that calmness and empowerment can coexist. Trust in your body's incredible capacity to birth your baby, and surround yourself with support, love, and positive energy as you embrace this transformative moment in your life.

Wishing you a beautiful and peaceful birthing journey!

yours in birth + beyond
